Keeping It Simple While Keeping Kids Occupied on Long Trips

When you’ve got a long ride ahead of you and little ones in the backseat, it goes without saying that restlessness is going to kick in sooner or later–and usually sooner! Every family driver knows the importance of keeping kids occupied on the road if you want to stay sane.

It can certainly be tempting to keep kids busy with their favorite video games, movies, or other electronics–and we certainly recommend double checking that you have your car charger before you leave–but these road trips are also the perfect time to bond with family and make some memories they’ll hang onto forever. Check out a few of our favorite old school road trip games; no batteries required!

Car Counting

Whether you’re on a busy highway or a thinly populated backroad, giving kids something to keep an eye out for can keep their attention out the window. While they stay focused on the outside, you can stay focused on the road.

Better yet, this can easily be tailored for kids of different ages. While younger kids might be captivated just by trying to spot five blue cars, for instance, older kids can get wrapped up keeping track of how many different states they can find on passing license plates.

Do You Know the Way?

If you don’t already have a map in your glovebox, you can usually find one for cheap or even for free at many gas stations or rest stops. Pass the map to your little passengers, point out where you are and where you’re headed, and have them try to keep track as you progress. To keep them focused, you can point out towns from road signs or other landmarks up ahead for them to find on their map.

The ABCs

There are plenty of classic alphabet-based games that fit well in the car, and playing a few can allow your family to find their favorite. The “I’m going on a picnic, and I am going to bring…” game is a classic that tests everyone’s memory. You can also work your way through the alphabet calling out letters from passing signs one at a time; expect a challenge as you get closer to the end!

However you and your crew decide to pass the time on the road, good company and a good attitude are sure to make all the difference on a long trip!
